Taking care of our teeth is something we learn from a young age. However, taking care of our gums is equally important. As we age, we might lose gum tissue, which can lead to various oral health problems such as tooth cavities, sensitive teeth, bad breath, and even tooth loss.

Receding gums, also known as gingival recession, is a common dental issue that is often caused by chronic gum disease or using hard-bristled toothbrushes, which can result in toothbrush abrasion.

For those who brush their teeth aggressively, the solution is simple: switch to a softer toothbrush and consider changing your brushing technique. Instead of scrubbing your teeth from side-to-side, the Canadian Dental Association recommends brushing gently at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, using a circular motion.

Gum disease, on the other hand, requires more attention. When you don’t brush and floss properly, it can lead to an infection at the gum line. Initially, you may notice red, bleeding gums while brushing. However, over time, the infection can break down the gum tissue where the teeth attach, leading to “attachment loss.” As gums begin to pull away from the teeth, you may experience various symptoms.

Maintaining good dental habits and regular dental checkups can prevent the onset of gum problems or catch them in the early stages. If you’re concerned about the health of your gums, talk to your Etobicoke dentist.
